Stockholm Exergi is one of the first companies in the world to develop a model for enabling the shift from reduced carbon dioxide emissions to negative emissions. Stockholm Exergi anticipates capturing over 800,000 tonnes of CO₂ annually at its bio-cogeneration plant in the Värtan area of Stockholm, making it the largest carbon removal project globally and a true leader in the field.
The BECCS implementation offers unique advantages. It operates on an existing bio-CHP plant with sustainable biomass sourcing, established in 2016. The system efficiently eliminates energy penalties by fully recovering and reusing process heat for the local district heating network. It is cost-effective, with a high rate biogenic CO₂ capture and the capability to remove 800,000 tonnes of carbon each year. Using over 40 years of proven, environmentally friendly capture technology (HPC), it provides a net positive, clean water supply.
